6Congratulatory Message from H.E. Phan Wannamethee President of the World Fellowship of Buddhists on the 46th General Conference of Japan Buddhist Federation Minobusan Kuonji Temple, Yamanashi Prefecture 7-8 October B.E.2565 (2022) On behalf of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (The WFB), its sub-organizations – the World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY), the World Buddhist University (WBU), all Regional Centres and its networking organization, I would like to convey my sincere congratulations to the Most Venerable Choyu Otani, President of the Japan Buddhist Federation (JBF), Reverend Hideo Kondo, Chairperson of the General Conference Committee for hosting the 46th General Conference of JBF from 7-8 October B.E. 2565 (2022) at Minobusan Kuonji Temple, Yamanashi Prefecture. At present conventional development model has led to individual and social conflicts. Buddhist approach to development can be applied for more peaceful, harmonious, and happy societies. The practice of generosity in Buddhism is largely entwined with the mind. Far more important is the intention and state of mind when giving. Genuine compassion is based not on our own projections and expectations, but rather on the well-being of the other. Buddhism encourages true compassion have no territorial bounds – it is freely offered and received. Hence, compassion and a good heart are not only important at the beginning but also in the middle and at the end. We should remember that not just we but everyone has to undergo suffering. This realistic perspective will increase our determination and our capacity to overcome troubles. Each new obstacle can be seen as yet another valuable opportunity to improve our mind, another opportunity for deepening our compassion; that is, we can develop both genuine sympathy for others’ suffering and the will to help the other. The theme of the 46th General Conference of the Japan Buddhist Federation on “The Preciousness of Living Together - Toward a society where no one is left behind” is timely to be discussed and derive the way to assist people in this difficult time that we are facing both of pandemic and calamity. On this special occasion, I wish you all success in your participation at the 46th General Conference of Japan Buddhist Federation.
